Growth Mindset(again)
Growth Mindset vs Fixed Mindset. Can everyone learn math or are some people “just good at it”? Recent research shows that a student with a Growth Mindset is a flexible learner. Even students who don’t appear to have strong skills in an area can become very proficient if they can develop a Growth Mindset towards a topic. A student with a Growth Mindset (GM) will take on challenges, learn from mistakes, accept feedback and criticism, practice and apply strategies to accomplish goals, persevere, ask questions and take risks. As a result, they reach ever-higher levels of achievement. A student with a Fixed Mindset (FM) won’t. The FM learner thinks that our character, intelligence and creative ability can’t be changed in any meaningful way. As a result, the FM learner may plateau early and achieve less than their full potential. There is a Mixed Mindset where a student is working from a Fixed Mindset to a Growth Mindset. Observe your child to see what mindset characteristics he or she exhibits. For more information about this go to MindsetWorks. Carol Dweck says that we are in charge of our own growth. We can change our mindset and reach our potential.

In math I was the whiz kid, keeper
of oranges and apples. What you don’t understand,

The tulip trees always dragged after heavy rain

In general, we can say that people learn well under the following conditions:
What They Learn
- What they learn is personally meaningful.
- What they learn is challenging and they accept the challenge.
- What they learn is appropriate for their developmental level.
How They Learn
- They can learn in their own way, have choices, and feel in control.
- They use what they already know as they construct new knowledge.
- They have opportunities for social interaction.
- They get helpful feedback.
- They acquire and use strategies.
Where They Learn
- They experience a positive emotional climate.
- The environment supports the intended learning.

Fifth Grade Safety Guidelines for Cell Phone Photography/Videography
- if you take a picture or video of someone, you must have the consent of that person; the same is true of tagging someone in a photo
- be wary of posting images of other people’s faces on social media; we have a right to privacy
- consider making your own social media accounts private
- what you put online is there forever; people can screenshot the image or save it to their own computers/devices
- people may not even want their picture taken at all; ask permission before even taking a photograph of someone
- do not take a picture of someone and then alter the photo in a mean-spirited way to get a laugh; do not use a person’s image or identity to create a character/avatar in a video game; these are forms of cyber bullying
- avoid retaliation if someone does something intentionally or unintentionally to hurt you; end the cycle by doing the right thing
- do not be a bystander; if you see something inappropriate or that makes you or someone else feel uncomfortable, get help
- respect the rights and privacy of every individual in this school
- only take photos or videos of students/teachers if you are directed to do so by your teachers
