Welcome Back!

Today was the first day back for teachers, and we are frantically trying to get ready for all our students to return on Monday, August 8th at 7AM!

I do hope to see you before then at our Meet the Teacher Night! Thursday, the 4th of August from 5 to 7 PM will be an opportunity to come to TSP to meet your teacher, find your classroom, and get signed up for everything!

I look forward to meeting all my new students and seeing familiar faces.

If you are in my homeroom, here is a suggested supply list:

SUGGESTED ESSENTIALS:

• One 2” (or 3”) three-ring binder (I have many – ask at Meet the Teacher Night)
  • NO Portfolios/Trapper Keepers or zippered binders
• 1 pkg. of dividers
• Two-pocket folders with three holes for binder
• 1 soft pencil pouch (with holes for binder)- NO boxes in desks
• Loose leaf-lined paper – stock up while on sale
• Several packages of pencils
• Wired Headphones
• Handheld Pencil Sharpener – highly recommended!

Please send the following, if you can when school resumes.  We will share these items in our classrooms.

• Boxes of tissues
• Disinfectant wipes
• Plastic zippered baggies – any/all sizes
• 1 pkg of new socks to use as whiteboard erasers! 

The following items are “Nice To Have” for your students –not essential:

• Pens
• Highlighters
• Dry-erase markers
• Pink block erasers and/or pencil top erasers
• Crayons and/or Markers or Colored Pencils
• 1 pair of kids Scissors 
• 12-inch Ruler
• Glue Sticks
• Math Flash Cards – multiplication and division (KEEP AT HOME)

 

The following is a wish list for the classroom when school resumes in person.  Any donated items will be greatly appreciated. 

• Loose leaf-lined paper – always needed!!!
• Dry Erase Markers 
• Snacks/mints for the class
• Card stock – white or colors
• Packages of plates, cups, napkins, and/or utensils

Well, I have never had a back to school quite like this one, but together we will work through it.

One part that stays the same is my excitement at seeing your faces. It is hard not to shake hands or hug those that I have known for years, but I am sending air hugs your way!

School still starts Monday, August 3rd – just not AT school. Chromebooks as well as math and ELA materials are available for pick up from the school starting Wednesday based on your last name. Please make sure you have the materials you will need to be an effective learner online.

My first suggestion is to decide where you are going to work. Pick an area that is as free from distractions as possible. You will, of course, need pencils and marking pens. A whiteboard and markers are nice to have. However, the two most crucial supplies will be a 2-inch binder and dividers. This is something you will be using whether we stay online or return in person. If you need one, get a hold of me and I will leave one in the office for you to pick up.

Come join us at Meet the Teacher Night on Thursday, 7/29 at Trailside Point Performing Arts Academy. We will be open from 5 to 7 pm.

Happy Summer!

If you are looking for some academic but fun things to keep your brain active this summer, go to our Google Classroom web page. I will keep it up and open over the summer and might even add a few more posts.

There are lots of online activities and games that you can take advantage and play over the summer to keep you ready for sixth grade.

Speaking of 6th grade, please remember to make sure your vaccinations and shots are up to date with the office by the deadlines.

Sixth Graders,

Happy Summer!!! Can you believe you are now a sixth grader? Hope you have been enjoying your summer, but just in case you have been thinking about school, here are some things that might help you out.

We do not have our class lists yet, so I have no idea who is in my homeroom. When we receive our class lists, I will be sending a letter home if there is enough time.

However, I can give you some basics. First, whether I am your homeroom teacher or not, I will be teaching half of the sixth graders math and science. The other math and science teacher is Ms. Daniels. We will have two ELA/Social Studies teacher; Mr. Manka and a new addition to our TSP staff, Mr. Eickhoff. In case you are wondering, Mr. Besonen has moved up to seventh grade.

You can meet all of us at Meet the Teacher. It will be held on Thursday, August 3rd from 5 to 7PM. You will find me in a new room. I have moved to room 15.The sixth grade rooms remain the same – rooms 15 through 18 on the first floor.

School actually starts on Monday, August 7th. You will report directly to your homeroom before 7:30AM. (You should know by then which is your homeroom.)

My supply list is the link at the bottom of this post. If you are a sales shopper or just like to be super prepared, this list should give you a good start. However, it does not include the requirements of the ELA teacher.I will update it prior to school starting to include the ELA supplies.

If you are looking for a head start, there are a couple of things you can do this summer. First, keep your brain active and engaged, Read! Yes, the math teacher is telling you to read! You should also make sure that you don’t lose what you have already learned. Especially your times tables! Do not come to sixth grade not knowing your math facts!!!!! Lots of fun online practice on sites such as multiplication.com or math playground.com to help you practice. Also, log in to ixl.com. You still have access to your account over the summer. You can go to whatever grade you want or just review some of your fifth grade math skills.

Math and Science Update

Today is an opportunity to see a Supermoon! First one since 1948! Moonrise was at 6PM, and it’s gorgeous, so take a look outside. This is one homework assignment you can do together!

In science, we are actually learning about cells and will be assigned a project later this week due towards the end of the month. Once we have learned the parts of a cell, students will be creating and labeling a 3 dimensional model of a plant or animal cell.  We will also be doing one in class next week. This can be a fun and creative project and will be the equivalent of a test grade.

In math, we are learning integers. Hard to understand below zero temperatures when you have lived in Phoenix all your life, but they are catching on. Chapter test will be Wednesday, November 23^rd.

We are currently in the middle of a canned food drive. If you have any non-perishable food items to contribute, please send it to school this week.

Progress reports will be sent home soon, but you don’t need to wait! You can go to ParentVue anytime. If you don’t have the app, there is a link on the Parents tab. Your child also has an account with StudentVue and can also check grades on our home page under the student tab.  http://www.laveeneld.org/

Just a quick reminder in case all the flyers didn’t make it home. Monday is Picture Day! Therefore, Monday is a free Dress UP Day. You can send money with students on Monday, order in advance online, or order up to 48 hours after pictures are taken through Lifetouch.

Hello!

A couple of quick updates for you starting with the most important one – NO school Monday! No matter how much your sixth grader begs, tell them not to come to school on Monday! If they like, they can practice math vocabulary on Quizlet or review fractions and factors on ixl.com so they won’t miss math too much this three day weekend.

Wednesday is a half day for students. Dismissal will be at 11:30.

We just finished our first chapter in Math, and the test results are in ParentVue. Anyone with a C or below were given time in class to review homework, complete the study guide, ask questions, or study previous lessons and then were given a retest. If the retest scores were higher, they were added to the grade book. Lower scores were not counted.

Today, we reviewed how to check grades in StudentVue. Students were even allowed to pull out their phones to download the app. Both StudentVue and ParentVue have apps that can be downloaded. You and your student can check grades anytime you like on the app or on our website.

Progress reports will be sent home Tuesday. We will ask you to sign it and return it by Thursday. ABI will be assigned to anyone who doesn’t return the progress report signed by Thursday.

Speaking of progress reports, I made a one-time offer to students today. Late assignments are not accepted. However, I will accept any chapter 3 homework assignments through Tuesday. In the future, assignments will only be accepted through the week it is due.
